Bishop urges resources industry to back nuclear energy

Deputy Liberal leader Julie Bishop has urged the resources industry to try to win public support for the politically sensitive case for nuclear energy.

Sitting in the audience at a business event in Perth on Tuesday, Ms Bishop asked a panel whether miners were doing enough to defeat “social activists” opposed to the development of the country’s natural resources.

“How on earth will we ever be able to consider nuclear power in this country if we can’t even get coal-seam gas on the agenda,” Ms Bishop asked the forum, hosted by The Australian Financial Review in partnership with Shell.

“When you see the sorts of social activism that has taken place in NSW over coal seam gas, I really wonder whether the mining and resources industry has done enough to promote its reason for being and what it provides for the Australian economy.”
