Duke Energy CEO: 'We need to talk about nuclear power'

Duke Energy CEO Lynn Good says the federal Clean Power Plan will force more of the company's coal plants to close, and that it is time for the nation to consider the role new nuclear plants may have in the energy mix.

Speaking as part of the CEO Series of the World Affairs Council of Charlotte, Good said that leadership in nuclear energy is shifting in the world. China is building 25 new units. The United States is currently building four (plus a fifth based on the previous-generation technology).

Good has spoken repeatedly about how difficult it is to consider building a new nuclear plant in the current economic climate. Natural gas is inexpensive and appears plentiful for the foreseeable future. “We are continuing to explore whether new nuclear can make sense for this region. I think all of you know it's an expensive, long-range proposition,” Good said. “And ...(with) the lack of an energy policy and a conversation about where nuclear fits, I can tell you how difficult that decision is.”
